Updating Wanscam/Foscam firmware

So I got these cheap cameras off eBay and they’re pretty good, for what they are.

Like most of these things, they are OEM and then someone else makes them popular. Such is the case here – I have Wanscam ones (Model AJ-C2WA-C118 or JW0008 – they appear to be the same), but Foscam are the popular ones at 3 times the price. Go figure.

I wanted to update the firmware, but didn’t want to brick them. Turns out it doesn’t really matter – firmware from Wanscam is branded with Foscam logo. So for firmware or manuals, go to the Foscam site. Firmware for FI8918W (currently loaded 11.37.2.54) works well.

It’s worth noting that the WebUI firmware from Foscam (2.4.18.18.001) is worse than an older Wanscam one (2.4.10.8).

———- Update 27/01/2014 ——–

Just updated with the latest firmware firmware from Foscam’s Australian site, released on Jan 23. Now on Firmware 11.37.2.55 and WebUI  2.4.10.9 (both Foscam ‘official’), both working like a charm.

———- Update 23/06/2014 ——–

Firmware 11.37.2.55 and Web UI 2.4.10.10 are now available on the Foscam site. Both work fine for me. FWIW I can’t seem to find firmware from Wanscan anymore.

———- Update 02/01/2016 ——–

Firmware11.37.2.65 and Web UI 2.4.10.13 are now available on the Foscam site. Both work fine for me.

  1. Just about to do as you described. However my current device information is:
    Device firmware version 67.2.1.138
Device embedded web ui version 9.0.8.38

    1. Hey Rory,
I haven’t seen that firmware or web UI version on either the Foscam or Wanscam sites. I’d be reluctant to use the firmwares from these sites as they are much older version numbers. I’d hate for you to ‘brick’ your camera, so I’d recommend double and triple checking the model/manufacturer of the device before proceeding.

    1. Hey Eneko,
Bit tricky to say – did you get any error messages? Make sure you check which firmware version is installed on your cams already. Often you can’t do a big jump in versions, so may need to install an earlier version first. For example, on the Foscam download page under the MPEG series there are 2 sets of firmware downloads, one for 11.37.2.XX and one for 11.22.2.XX. If you’re on 11.22.2.XX try installing 11.22.2.51 first then see if you can install 11.37.2.59.
Not sure if that will work, but it’s the best I can advise. If you still have trouble, maybe try the Foscam Live Chat.
      Hope that helps. 🙂

  2. Hi All,

Recently I update my JW0008 wanscam to
    Device Firmware Version 67.2.2.172
Device Embeded Web UI Version 9.0.4.67

Now I want to flash them with the Foscam software
    System Firmware Version 11.37.2.59
    WebUI Firmware Version 2.4.10.11
but it continiously fails after I uploaded the Foscam System Firmware Version.

Does anyone have any idea how come?
What do I need to do in order to flash the Wan Scam camera onto a Foscam?

    Cheers

    1. Hi Floris…

Where did you get the firmware’s from wanscan? I can’t find anything on the wanscan site…

      Thanks in advance…

  3. Hi Floris…

One question: where did you get the “Device Firmware and the Device Embeded Web UI Version” from wanscan to do that update? Cause i can’t find no firmware updates on wanscan site…

    Thanks in advance…

  4. Hola!

I have exactly same problem as Floris. I’m having JW0008 with 67.2.2.172 firmware and 9.0.8.48 WebUI versions.

If I try to install Foscam firmware it only reboots the camera and keeps old firmware.

After Wanscam updated their webpages I haven’t found any firmwares. I had link to their latest files which I got from some IPCAM Forum but it’s not working anymore. Site looked a bit unofficial but It was posted by Wanscam’s “techincal person”.

My JW0008 is crashing and rebooting daily so I’m willing to try Foscams FW.

  5. I have a JW0008 as well and my issue is I can’t get it to send email alerts. I have another 3 cameras that do work and found myself at this site as well. my loads are 67.2.2.185 and Web 9.0.4.72 that came with the camera. i just thought it maybe a firmware issue that i cant email but not sure now. I also can not upgrade or down grade the firmware in order to try something so i’m stumped now. Looks like it goes in the rubbish. Thing that pisses me off is the other cameras email uugghh

    1. Hey Steve,

I can appreciate how frustrating that must be. Let me go over a few things – I imagine you have done all the logical things already, but I can’t hurt to have a fresh take on things. I’ll start with the email side of things:
NOTE: This is based from what I know from the Foscam firmware – it may be different for the Wanscam firmware
      * Confirm that the email settings on camera X are the same as on cameras A,B & C – exactly the same.
      * Check your DNS settings are all the same as the other cameras.
      * Have a look at http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:####/get_params.cgi?user=username&pwd=password and check that all the ‘var mail_X’ variables have been saved correctly. If not, try using http://xxx.xxx.xxx:####//set_mail.cgi?svr=&port=&user=&pwd=&sender=&receiver1=&receiver2=&receiver3=
&receiver4=&mail_inet_ip= to set the email details.

For more details on the the other functions available have a look at this document, page 27 for set_email.cgi

      * Are there any firewalls etc that might be blocking traffic from that camera?
      * Is camera X on a separate subnet, wifi adapter etc? Is it in any way different to the network that the other cameras are on?
      * Can you swap cameras? Does one of the working ones send successfully from the same location as the ‘faulty’ one?
      * Try connecting it directly to your router, maybe set a static IP address…
      * Can you confirm that motion detection settings are working and triggering an event by setting an FTP upload?
      * I assume you can view video from the camera, so can you maybe use something like Wireshark to see if there is traffic coming from the camera’s IP address on the appropriate port for whichever email protocol you are using (eg 110/25 for POP)?

AS for the change from Wanscam firmware to Foscam firmware (and I thing this will apply to some of the previous commenters as well), try starting at the earliest Foscam version you can download and upgrade them incrementally. It’s been too long since I updated mine to remember where I started to successfully switch from Wanscam to Foscam firmware, so that’s the best advice I can give.

Good luck, I hope that’s of some help and let us know how it works out for you.

      The BFG

    1. Hi Nico,

I don’t see any settings for HTTP. You can set alarms to be triggered by motion or sound detected and there are check boxes to send notifications by email or to upload a picture (via FTP), but nothing in the device settings for HTTP.

May be worth double checking the user manual from the Foscam site, but I don’t think it is a feature of these cameras/firmware.

      Hope that helps.

  6. Dear friends,

I also have old JW0008 and would be happy to update its firmware/webUI. However foscam website reqires login/pass to download software. How do you do downloads? Could anybody send me via email the foscam soft?

    Thanks in advance!

  7. Hello

I’ve an JW008 with firmware version 67.2.2.154 and UI version Version 9.0.8.48

On Foscam website I’ve found three versions of FI8918W firmware.
Which one could be applied to my JW008 ?

11.37.2.65 suitable for 11.37.2.59 and previous versions
    11.22.2.51 suitable for 11.22.2.XX
    11.37.2.65 suitable for 11.37.2.63 only

    1. Hey Roberto,

I’d start with the earliest version possible and upgrade incrementally – so start with 11.22.2.51 and then 11.37.2.65 suitable for 11.37.2.59

No guarantees it will work but I think that’s the safest bet.

Hope that helps and good luck.

  8. Unfortunately, as says Mr. Roberto Nunin, Foscam firmware versions and web UI are only ones, and none of them is more compatible with WANSCAM JW0008 … no one has an old Foscam firmware to try to upgrade with that before?

  9. Just a word of caution, upgrading to the foscam software may stop wifi from working! This happened to me 🙁 Some of the clones have a different wifi chip to the original foscams.

Additionally, for security reasons, it is not possible to downgrade the system firmware once upgraded. Allegedly you can do it with soldering and a serial port however I haven’t gone down this path.
